Maintaining Professionalism in Schools Is Essential

Professionalism is a quality that every educator and school employee should possess. Administrators and teachers represent their school district and should do so at all times in a professional manner. This includes being mindful that you are still a school employee even outside of school hours. Honesty and Integrity All school employees should also be aware that they are almost always being watched by students and other community members. When you are a role model and authority figure for children, how you carry yourself matters. Your actions can always be scrutinized.  Therefore, teachers are expected to be honest and act with integrity. As such, it is crucial to always be honest about and up to date with all your certifications and licensures. Also, any kind of manipulation with other peoples information, whether it is physical paperwork or in a conversation, needs to be limited to the necessities. This kind of approach will help you maintain physical and emotional safety, which are also critical responsibilities of a teacher. Relationships Building and maintaining respectful and positive relationships with the key stakeholders are main components of professionalism. This includes relationships with your students, their parents, other educators, administrators, and support personnel. Just like everything else, your relationships should be based on honesty and integrity. Failing to make deep, personal connections can create a disconnect that might impact the overall effectiveness of the school. When dealing with students, it is important to be warm and friendly, while at the same time keeping a certain distance and not blurring the lines between your professional and personal lives. It is also key to treat everyone fairly and avoid bias or favoritism. This applies as much to your everyday interactions with your students as it does to your approach to their performance in class and their grades. Similarly, your relationships with coworkers and administrators are crucial to your professionalism. A good rule of thumb is to always be polite and err on the side of caution. Taking on a learners attitude, being openminded, and assuming best intentions go a long way. Appearance For educators, professionalism also includes personal appearance and dressing appropriately. It includes how you talk and act both inside and outside of school.  In many communities, it involves what you do outside of school and with whom you have relationships. As a school employee, you must keep in mind that you represent your school district in everything that you do. The following example policy is designed to establish and promote a professional atmosphere among the faculty and staff. Professionalism Policy All employees are expected to adhere to this policy and to at all times maintain professionalism such that an employee’s behavior and action(s) are not harmful to the district or workplace and such that an employee’s behavior and action(s) are not harmful to working relationships with teachers, staff members, supervisors, administrators, students, patrons, vendors, or others. Staff members who take a sincere professional interest in students are to be commended. The teacher and administrator who inspires, guides, and helps students can have a lasting influence on students throughout their lives. Students and staff members should interact with each other in a warm, open, and positive fashion. However, a certain distance must be maintained between students and staff in order to preserve the businesslike atmosphere necessary to achieve the educational mission of the school. The Board of Education considers it obvious and universally accepted that teachers and administrators are role models. The district has a duty to take steps to prevent activities which adversely intrude into the educational process and which could lead to undesirable consequences. In order to maintain and preserve the appropriate environment necessary to achieve the educational mission of the school, any unprofessional, unethical, or immoral behavior or action(s) harmful to the district or workplace, or any such behavior or action(s) harmful to working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, administrators, students, patrons, vendors, or others may lead to disciplinary action under applicable disciplinary policies, up to, and including termination of employment.

Guayana Essay Guyana is a country located on the northern coast of South America. It is bounded on the north by theAtlantic Ocean and on the east by Suriname. On the south side Guyana is bordered by Brazil, and on thewest side is Brazil and Venezuela. Guyana achieved its independence on May 26, 1966 when it broke awayfrom Britain. Land and ResourcesGuyana has three different major geographical regions. These consist of a belt of soil whichranges from five to forty miles, a dense forest area which makes up about four-fifths of the country anda region of savanna. The country also has many rivers that have some spectacular waterfalls and one riverhas the highest single-drop waterfall in the world. These rivers are navigable from the sea to about one-hundred miles inland, after that they are no longer navigable due to rapids and falls. Natural ResourcesThe lands of Guyana have many valuable natural resources. Within the lands you can find gold,diamonds, kaolin, manganese and bauxite. If you were to travel a little ways off shore, you could alsolocate some petroleum. These natural resources are very important in helping out the economy of this poorcountry. The lands have much resource also found in the vegetation and the forests. The plants and treesare documented for their abnormal size and density. Guyana has an excellent lumber industry, they sellsome of the finest greenheart as well as mora. Within the forests are a big variety of wildlife which canrange from deer to anteater and a few types of monkeys. The birds are very diverse, they consist of forexample sugarbirds, cotingas and manakins all which feed on Guyanas vast array of insects. Being the capital, it is the main port cityand holds the major educational institution in Guyana. The University of Guyana is the best highereducation and there are many schools throughout the country. In the past few years the country has takeneducation to much higher level. Guyana was settled by East Indians, many still speak Urdu, Hindu and Tamil dialects. The officiallanguage is English. The culture is close to the Suriname and French Guiana than to the rest of SouthAmerica. All of these various cultures have remained fairly distinct and in todays society each grouphas its own style of life and culture. EconomyIn 1966, Guyana was in the early stages of developing its resources. The British drew up aneconomic plan to continue development with the help of experts from the United States as well as Canada. The economy in the late 1980s was dominated mainly by agriculture and service industries. Theseindustries pulled in an average revenue of approximately 164 million dollars per year and an averageexpenditure of 284 million dollars per year. The agriculture is about one-fourth of the countries gross domestic product. Sugar and itsby-products and rice account for most of the exports. Coconuts, coffee, citrus fruits ,corn and othertropical fruits and vegetables are grown mainly for consumption. Another major crop that is raised on theplush savanna lands are livestock such as cattle, hogs, sheep and chicken. Along the coast is where much of the cultivation takes place. The tremendous strips of alluvialsoil are very rich in nutrients. A big problem that these coastal lands see are much flooding andirrigation problems such as drainage. This happens because much of this land is below the high-tide markof the sea and the rivers. In February 1970, Guyana was proclaimed a republic under the newpresident Arthur Chung. In the 1970s, diplomatic relations were gained with China. By 1976 the country aimed for a selfsufficiency in agriculture. In 1974, the government gained control of all foreign trade. In anticipation of a new constitution, the National Assembly extended the five year limit . The Problem with American School Systems The Problem with American School Systems All over America there seems to be painfully obvious differences in the school systems which cater to the upper class majority and the ones that serve the lower and middle class minority. There is a strong undercurrent of racial inequality in today's school systems, which negatively effect the quality of education that its students receive. A schools potential to give a proper education often depends on the perspective economic, and social, or should I say racial backgrounds of its students. America's school systems seem to be returning to their former state of segregation. If the government doesn't do something to evenly distribute funds and programs in America's schools the rate of poverty, crime, and illiteracy will steadily increase, thus widening the gap between the lower class and the rich. The population of minorities who live in the United States is constantly increasing and their numbers can contribute to the success or the failure of the nation. Magnet schools, private schools, or suburban schools serve the upper class, majority of the American population. These schools are some of the best high schools in the nation. There are usually a small number of minority children who are lucky enough to attend such quality schools but white children defiantly make up the majority of upper class high school populations. In an article that I read from the "National Catholic Reporter" called "A tale of two schools" the author Viebica Stokley discussed the differences between public schools and magnet schools. There were constant references made about the contrasting environments of good schools and mediocre ones. The magnet school mentioned in the article was called Franklin High. Franklin was a clean, well-lit school. It is air conditioned and freshly painted. There is no graffiti, the bathrooms are clean and there are no roaches or rats present. Franklin has an ample supply of books and supplies. Franklin has a huge library and a computer lab filled with new computers. The school has a TV studio, a new theater, and a school newspaper. Students don't skip classes or miss days at school. Franklin has few discipline problems; there are few fights, if any. Franklin has a fifteen to one teacher student ratio, which means that students are able to receive more one on one attention. Students who attend Franklin take college prep courses like Spanish, physics, and calculus. Students have higher overall grade averages and test scores. One hundred percent of the students who graduate from Franklin go on to college. The students who go to Franklin are given every opportunity to succeed and they don't have to ever worry about being assaulted in school by some kid who is there to cause trouble instead of learn. Public schools serve the lower class and middle class minorities whom, can't afford to pay for a better education or are unable to find transportation to suburban schools. Inner city high schools are ranked the lowest in the nation when it comes to the quality of education they offer. The population in these schools is mainly black. African Americans make at least fifty percent of the population; Latin and Asian students usually help round out the rest of the population. Unlike Franklin High, Fortier high is the complete opposite. The grounds were filthy and the school has no air conditioning. They are at a severe disadvantage because they don't have enough books for all of their students. They have a small library that doubles as a classroom during the day. The school doesn't have computers or a newspaper. Classes are over crowded; Fortier has a thirty to one student teacher ratio. Sometimes there are nearly forty students packed into one class. The 1,200 students that go to Fortier barely get attention form teachers. Usually children who start high school there who are already behind fall further behind. Students that go to Fortier high skip classes and often miss days in school. Violence is a common occurrence here. News crews and police are constantly up at the school covering a story about guns or drugs. Fortier is known as the worst high school in New Orleans. Only twenty percent of Fortier's one thousand students go on to a four-year college. Fortier's collective grade point average is one point five. Most graduates would be lucky to find a mediocre factory job. Some students drop out and get a G.E.D or find a trade; others just fall by the wayside. The combination of inadequate funding, lack of college prep classes and programs, lack of parent involvement, weak administration, teacher student apathy, and an
